Join us for this FREE BBC Radio 3 New Music Show Invitation Concert featuring four recent works by composers from the north of Ireland at the Ulster Hall, Belfast on 09 January 2025!
Jamie Thompson's 101 False Starts is shot through with shards and fragments of contrary tonalities, textures, and shifting rhythmic cadences.” The piece is scored for a chamber ensemble and was commissioned as part of the Belfast 24 project which the Ulster Orchestra recently performed at their home on Townsend Street.
Following this, soprano Michaela Reiner joins the orchestra on stage in Ed Bennett’s Belonging, “Belonging uses a fragment of text from the poem ‘Dafna’ by the Northern Irish poet Cherry Smyth. Cherry’s original poem is a reaction to the work of the visual artist Dafna Talmor…The idea of ‘Belonging’ seems particularly pertinent at the moment with so many people around the world being driven from their land, their homes, their families. ‘Belonging’ is thought for those with nowhere to call home.”
Next, a 2023 work from Co. Down composer Amy Rooney
titled Lining Out which, “…refers to an ancient choral technique in
which one person sings a line and the rest of the congregation follows, each
embellishing and altering the melody as they choose.” And finally, to close our
concert, a world premiere from composer Frank Lyons called Spin 3
a piece written for solo violin, live electronics and orchestra, featuring the
acclaimed Irish violinist, Darragh Morgan.
The Ulster Orchestra is conducted by David Brophy.
